The General Equivalency Diploma (G.E.D.) program is designed to give those indiviuals lacking a high school diploma an equal footing when applying for colleges and work. More than 90 percent of colleges and universities and more than 95 percent of employers in the United States recognize the GED as being equivalent to a high school diploma. The Wilson County Adult Education Center offers a G.E.D. Preparatory course to ready students to take the exam.
It is important to realize that the motivation and efforts of a student will determine how quickly he/she will advance through the preparatory course. Students with high levels of motivation and who put in the time necessary typically make rapid progress through the course.
It is our goal for students to pass the G.E.D. test, and we encourage all students to follow the teacher's instructions in order to make this happen. The test is offered several times a month at Volunteer State Community College, and also in Lebanon at Lebanon High School several times per year. To take the exam, the applicant must have the following.
- As of July 1, 2007, the $65.00 test fee to take the GED will be paid by the state for participants who meet the qualification requirements.*
- Social Security Card or Birth Certificate
- Tennessee Driver's License or other authorized Tennessee ID
- Recent picture which will be made by the Adult Education Center for ID purposes.
- Any previous G.E.D. scores
You may view statistics of the G.E.D test by clicking here.
* The Wilson County Adult Education Center offers free G.E.D. courses to students 18 and over. For students under the age of 18, the Adult Education Center strongly recommends remaining in high school. Should a student under the age of 18 decide to enroll, he/she must furnish proof that he/she is not currently enrolled in high school. There will be a $50.00 fee for G.E.D. Courses for each student under the age of 18. This money pays for books and registration into the program. Each student who is accepted will be required to take an entrance exam.
Basic Computer Skills
Our Basic Computer Skills classes are designed with the inexperienced user in mind. In today's world, a general knowledge of how to operate and maintain a computer is vital. The six week course covers the following topics and costs $40.00.
- Introduction to Microsoft Windows©
Microsoft Word©
Microsoft Excel©
E-mail
Internet Searches
- Monthly Maintenance
The Basic Educational Skills program is designed to help students with deficiencies in areas such as elementary mathematics, reading and reading comprehension, grammar and spelling, and basic algebra. These classes are free of charge and are usually taken in order to prepare for the G.E.D. test.Students are required to take evaluation exams (known as TABE tests) which allows the instructors to determine where the student requires help. After determining a student's educational level, the instructors then work with each student to help him/her get to the level required to pass the G.E.D. test.Students are not required to take the G.E.D. test after the Basic Educational Skills program. Some adult students have already completed their high school diplomas, and simply wish to "brush up" on their skills. These students may still enroll in order to become more familiar with needed skills.
Classes for the Adult Basic Educational Skills program are held Monday through Thursday with day classes from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. with a short break of 20 minutes in the middle of the afternoon. Night classes are offered on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:00 to 7:30 p.m. Students may make up hours by attending another night or day class, but should notify the instructor prior to doing so. Students should bring paper, a pencil, and a pen to class, and should sign in daily.
English as a Second Language
The Wilson County Adult Education Center offers courses to adult students whose native language is one other than English. The Center does not focus these classes on translating from the native language to English, but instead builds from the ground up to teach the English Language as a child would learn it.
Classes in the ESL program are taught from 2:00-3:30 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays at the Adult Education Center in Lebanon, and at Maple Hill Church of Christ in Lebanon on Saturdays at 3:00 p.m.
