When deemed appropriate by the IEP team, students are included in regular classes throughout the day with special educators and general educators collaborating on meeting the needs of all students.
Students who require more specialized instruction than is available in regular classes attend resource classes for a portion of their school day. These classes have lower pupil/teacher ratio allowing the teacher to work closely with the student on identified needs. The instruction may be provided on an individual or small group basis and is always carefully coordinated with the regular class activities.
COMPREHENSIVE DEVELOPMENT CLASSES
Our comprehensive development classes are for students whose disabilities are so profound or complex that they require intensive educational intervention and can benefit from participation in the general education program only through the direct supervision of a special education teacher or an educational assistant. We presently have sixteen K-12 comprehensive classes throughout the county serving students from all school zones.
Students whose intellectual abilities and potential for achievement are so outstanding that special provisions are required to meet their educational needs qualify as intellectually gifted. An IEP team determines if special provisions are required and makes recommendations based on those findings.

Presently students with visual disabilities that impact their education are provided services in their home schools. A certified teacher of the visually impaired meets with these students as recommended by the IEP team. This teacher must be a part of the IEP team making the recommendation. Due to the close proximity of Tennessee School for the Blind, we are able to collaborate with them on program recommendations for some of our students.
Students with moderate hearing losses are presently provided services in their home schools. Students with more profound hearing losses are provided services at the elementary level at Stoner Creek Elementary and at the middle school level at Mt. Juliet Middle School. The school the student attends is determined by the IEP team. Click here to learn more about the Wilson County Deaf Education Program. Speech/language services are available to identified students in all our schools as recommended by the IEP team. A speech pathologist must be a member of the IEP team making the recommendation.
OCCUPATION AND PHYSICAL THERAPY
Occupational and physical therapy are available to students in all our schools when recommended by the IEP team. An occupational or physical therapist must be a member of the IEP team making the recommendation.
When a student needs to be absent from school for an extended period of time he/she may qualify for homebound services. To apply for homebound services a Homebound Referral Packet must be picked up in the guidance office of the child's school or from the school nurse, completed and returned to the Wilson County Board of Education for review. Click here for more information on homebound services.
Students who have graduated from high school with a diploma of specialized instruction, but need intensive training in the areas of job skills and daily living skills are eligible for services through one of our transition classes. The two transition classes in Wilson County are located at Mt. Juliet High School and Lebanon High School. For more information on our transition classes, click here.
