Meeting the needs of special education students is a priority of Lakeview Elementary and Wilson County Schools. When deemed
appropriate by a multidisciplinary team, the Special Education Department provides a variety of services to students,
ranging from consultation to comprehensive placement, with related services being provided as needed.
The Wilson County Schools Special Education Department serves approximately 1,700 students based on
eligibility requirements of 18 disability categories. We provide a variety of specialized instructional techniques and
learning environments based on each child's unique characteristics and needs. Services include, but are not limited to,
consultation, direct service, related services such as speech and language therapy, counseling, occupational and physical
therapy, vision and hearing services, school nursing, transition services, and psychological interventions. Our special
education staff provides assistance in such areas as academics, social, emotional/behavioral, pre-vocational/vocational,
and motor skills. Over the years we have made significant progress in expanding the staff, increasing our supply of
materials and equipment for teachers and students, and improving technology within the special education classrooms. In
addition, we strive to maintain a cooperative relationship with general classroom teachers, administrators, parents, and
outside agencies involved with the student. Our goal is to provide the most appropriate services for all special education
students in Wilson County in an effort to develop productive members of the community. |
