Four (4) credits in English
Language Arts are required for graduation.
In addition, effective with students entering the ninth (9th)
grade in the fall of 2001, a score at the proficient level on the English 2
Gateway test is required of any student receiving a regular high school
diploma. Standard and Honors English
classes are offered at each grade level.
Advanced Placement English is available to juniors and seniors.
READING (3099A) 1 credit
Open to grades 9
and 10
Recommendation:
Students scoring at or below the fourth (4th) stanine on the reading
and/or language arts sections of the seventh (7th) or eighth (8th)
grade Terra Nova
Elective credit
only; will not substitute for required English credit
Focuses on developmental reading skills, including vocabulary development and reading comprehension; may be taken concurrently with English 1 or 2.
An intervention option for students which will enhance the opportunity for success on the Tennessee Gateway Test for English 2. Elective credit only; will not substitute for required English credit.
Focuses on those areas
necessary for success on Gateway English 2 test, including reading, writing,
viewing and representing, and speaking and listening.
ENGLISH 1 (3001) 1 credit
The study of basic
communication skills (reading, writing, listening, and speaking), literary
skills, usage, speech, and spelling; the review of grammar and its application
to composition; an emphasis on the development of essay-writing skills,
especially persuasive essays; and an introduction to basic literary
selections.
Summer reading (a
minimum of one [1] novel) is required.
HONORS ENGLISH 1 (3001H) 1 credit
Prerequisite:
A stanine of six (6) or above on both the Reading and Language Arts sections of
the seventh (7th) grade TCAP Terra Nova OR an “A” average in 8th
grade English or “B” in 8th grade Honors English.
Includes the same material
as English I, with a more intensive study of composition (especially persuasive
essays) and literature. Grammatical
skills should be intact with little or no remediation necessary.
Summer reading (a minimum of two [2] novels) is
required.
ENGLISH 2 (3002) 1 credit
Prerequisite: English 1
A continuation of English
1. Includes the study of reading,
writing (especially persuasive essays), viewing and representing, and speaking
and listening. Students work to
comprehend and produce a wide variety of texts, including traditional works of
literature, practical and persuasive forms of communication that involve
speaking and listening skills, and the use of appropriate technology and media
forms. Emphasizes the communication and
critical thinking skills that empower students to function effectively in a
rapidly changing world.
Summer reading (a
minimum of one [1] novel) is required.
HONORS ENGLISH 2 (3002H) 1 credit
Prerequisite: 85 average in English 1 or 80 in Honors English 1.
Focuses on those skills
begun in the first level. Stresses
composition, including an emphasis on persuasive essay writing, an introduction
to the research paper (including an introduction to MLA documentation), and a
research project, literary analysis, and communication skills.
Summer reading (a minimum of two [2] novels) is
required.
WORLD STUDIES: HONORS (3002H/3401)
Open to sophomores
2 credits (1 credit in World History and 1 credit in
Honors English 2
Prerequisite: 85 average in English 1 or 80 in Honors
English 1
A
multi-disciplinary course, incorporating the literature, music, art, culture,
social structure, and lifestyle of each era in world history. Emphasis on writing, research, and
student-centered projects.
Summer reading (a
minimum of three [3] novels) is required.
ENGLISH 3 (3003) 1 credit
Pre-requisite: English 2
A continuation of the study
of grammar, usage, composition, and communication skills, with emphasis on
vocabulary building, spelling, letter and persuasive essay writing, and library
and dictionary skills. The focus is on
American literature. Research paper
required.
Summer reading (a
minimum of one [1] novel) is required.
HONORS ENGLISH 3 (3003H) 1 credit
Prerequisite: 85 average in English 2 or 80 in Honors
English 2.
An in-depth study of
American literature and composition (especially the persuasive essay). Research paper required.
Summer reading (a minimum of three [3] novels) is
required.
ADVANCED PLACEMENT ENGLISH 3 (3013) 1
credit
Prerequisites:
Must meet one (1) of the following criteria: A PLAN composite of 19 or
an ACT composite score of 22 or higher; PSAT or SAT verbal score at the 50th
percentile or higher; 90 average in regular English 2 or 85 in Honors English
2; or recommendation from two (2) previous English teachers. A writing sample may be required.
Designed
to prepare students for the Advanced Placement examination taken in May
following completion of Advanced Placement English 4; emphasis in the course is
placed on a rigorous critical examination of literature and on composition
skills.
Summer reading (four
[4] novels and two [2] dramas) is required.
ENGLISH 4 (3005) 1 credit
Pre-requisite: English 3
Focuses on the study of
language, composition, and British literature. Research paper required.
Summer reading (a
minimum of one [1] novel) is required.
HONORS ENGLISH 4 (3005H) 1 credit
Prerequisite:
85 average in English 3 or 80 in Honors English 3
Includes the study of
language, British literature, and composition, including essays. Expanded
research paper required.
Summer reading (a minimum of four [4] longer literary selections)
is required.
ENGLISH 4/APPLIED COMMUNICATION (3007) 1 credit
For seniors who have passed the Gateway English 2
test.
Prerequisite: Credit in a vocational class.
Emphasizes skills in an occupational
setting and satisfies the English 4 (NOT Honors English 4) credit required for
graduation. This course differs from
English IV in that it requires more interaction skills and more emphasis on
transfer of communication skills to actual working situations
ADVANCED PLACEMENT ENGLISH IV (3014) 2 credits (full year)
Prerequisite:
Advanced Placement English 3 OR two (2) of the following criteria: an ACT
composite score of 22 or higher; PSAT or SAT verbal score of 50th
percentile or higher; 85 in Honors English 3; or recommendation from two (2)
previous English teachers. A writing
sample may be required.
An in-depth study of
examples of literature from various fields and periods. Studies include drama; modern tragedy: selected novels; lyric and narrative poetry;
short stories; nonfiction; and an introduction to varied writing forms,
including essays, scholarly criticism, analytical interpretations, and literary
research. Summer reading (four [4]
novels and two [2] dramas) is required.
Students will take the national Advanced Placement examination in the
spring; those scoring high enough may receive college credit, advanced
placement, or the right to waive a required English course in college.
ENGLISH 101, 102 : ENGLISH COMPOSTION 1 credit
(college-level credit with dual Enrollment
with Vol State Community College)

Prerequisites:
Grade point of 3.0; ACT composite score of 19 and an ACT score of 19 on the English
subtest; Credit in English 101 prerequisite for English 102
A course which includes the
following: expository writing, based
primarily on the analysis of essays and literary works; emphasis on rhetorical
modes, documentation skills, and revision; and argumentative writing based on
issues raised in essays and literary works.
Emphasis on research skills, support, and revision. This is a college-level dual enrollment course.
NOTE: Students who complete and pass both English
101 and 102 will earn credit for high school English 4 and nine (9) semester
hours of college credit as follows: six
(6) hours for college freshman English and three (3) hours for Speech
Communication. Students should verify with the university/college which they
will be attending that the credit will be accepted. Tuition will be charged.

SPEECH (3015) 1 credit
Open to
grades 10, 11, and 12
A basic speech course
designed to improve the student’s ability to compose, to think, to listen
critically, and to deliver different types of speeches. Emphasizes development of ideas,
organization, and delivery and includes debate.
CREATIVE WRITING (3012) 1 credit
Open to
grades 11 and 12
Prerequisites: Application to include a writing sample; and
recommendation from one (1) previous English teacher.
Focuses on self-expression,
writing styles, diction, sentence structure, and format. Emphasizes the steps of process writing,
writing for a variety of audiences, and diverse genres of writing (i.e., short
stories, poetry, essays, drama).
