ACCOUNTING 1                         (3701)             1 credit

Open to grades 10, 11, and 12

Prerequisite: Algebra 1 or Math Tech 2

Provides students with fundamental accounting skills and theories.  Students are introduced to accounting terms, the accounting equation, and the use of accounting in business transactions.  General and specialized journals, subsidiary ledgers, worksheets, and financial statements are taught for sole proprietorships, partnerships, and corporations.  Payroll and taxes are introduced along with banking activities related to accounting.  Simulation sets are used to reinforce accounting procedures.  Some automation will be incorporated.

ACCOUNTING 2                         (3702)             1 credit

Open to grades 11 and 12

Prerequisite: Accounting 1

Advanced accounting course designed to develop skills in specialized accounting procedures such as control systems, cost accounting, managerial accounting, and fundamental auditing procedures.  Automation is incorporated in this class.

 

PRINCIPLES OF BUSINESS                     (3709)             1 credit

Designed for students interested in acquiring introductory business information for personal use and as an initial course for students planning a career in business.  Course content emphasizes consumerism, financial management, insurance, and career opportunities.

 

ADMINISTRATIVE MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS 1

            (3737 or 3737V)         1 credit

Prerequisite:  Keyboarding/Keyboarding Applications OR Document Creation Design/Keyboarding Applications

Provides advanced training, including hands-on experiences, for students pursuing a career in business and information technology.  Training includes meeting workplace standards, utilizing word processing software to create business documents, improving listening and speaking skills, using the Internet as a resource, maintaining business records, job search and interviewing strategies, managing financial records, and developing professional leadership skills.  Administrative support simulations will be used to provide the student with experience in a multi-tasking environment.

ADMINISTRATIVE MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS 2

                                                (3737A or 3737AV)    1 credit

Prerequisite:  Administrative Management Systems 1

Provides in-depth office education training; emphasizes professionalism production skills, and developing administrative skills to meet industry's standards. Students may qualify for a working internship in the business community.

 DOCUMENT CREATION DESIGN/KEYBOARDING APPLICATIONS

 (3727/3775 or 3727V/3775V)          1 credit

Designed to improve students’ use and understanding of the computer in the information age.  Students use a variety of computer applications to increase productivity.  Focus is on advancing touch-method keyboarding skills, document processing, numeric keypad, and production of reports, tables, and mailable business documents, with an emphasis on industry production standards using Microsoft applications.  Formatting, typography, and layout design concepts are applied in the preparation of business letters, forms, reports, and tables.  Simulated projects are used for problem-solving and business document preparation.

NOTE:  This course may not be taken if a student is enrolled in or has earned a credit in Keyboarding/Keyboarding Applications.

 

INFORMATION MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS 1          

(3730 or 3730V)       1 credit

Prerequisite: Keyboarding/Keyboarding Applications or

Document Creation Design/Keyboarding Applications

An introductory course, which examines the use of computers for business and personal use.  Includes the study of networking functions, Internet skills, word processing, spreadsheets, database systems,  graphics, presentation design and desktop publishing. Students work toward the attainment of high-level employable competencies.  Team development is stressed as students work on projects.

 

INFORMATION MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS 2        

(3730A or 3730AV)      1 credit

Prerequisite:  Information Management Systems 1

Prepares students with skills necessary in problem solving using current and emerging information technology as it relates to professional careers.  Students work toward the attainment of high-level employable competencies. Using Microsoft Office 2000 applications, an emphasis is placed on individual and team projects, business simulations, and development of an electronic employment portfolio. 

 

KEYBOARDING/KEYBOARDING APPLICATIONS

                                    (3710/3775 or 3710V/3775V)     1 credit

Focuses on mastery of the keyboard, speed and accuracy building, document processing, and production of letters, tables, and manuscripts and on advanced keyboarding skills in the production of mailable business documents.  Industry production standards are emphasized.  Students are evaluated on proofreading and editing skills.  Formatting, typography, and layout design concepts are applied in document preparation of business letters, forms, invoices, manuscripts, and tabulated and columnar information.

 

WEB PAGE DESIGN/ELECTRONIC COMMERCE  

(3776 or 3776V)         1 credit

Prerequisite:  Information Management Systems 1 or Document Creation Design/Keyboarding Applications

Prepares students to develop commercial websites on the Internet.  Includes the language, structure, and fundamental concepts and principles of page layout and design.  Students develop Internet research techniques; study fundamental concepts of digital commerce transaction security; examine related social, legal, and ethical issues; study electronic financial management practices; and integrate the elements of Web design.  Upon completion, students will be able to evaluate, implement, and apply the use of technology in digital commerce and web page design for business.

 

DESKTOP PUBLISHING/INTERACTIVE MULTIMEDIA DESIGN

                        (3741/3746 or 3741V/3746V)           1 credit

Prerequisite: Keyboarding/Keyboarding Applications OR Document Creation Design/Keyboarding Applications

Emphasis on production of business application, covering the principles of design and layout.  Students create, organize, and edit information using keyboard scanner, Internet, and digital camera.  Covers electronic systems and software programs used in graphic design, page composition, and image conversion.  Includes designing, writing, and producing computer-based multimedia projects.  Stresses individual and team development.

 

MANAGEMENT/AMERICAN BUSINESS LEGAL SYSTEMS

                        (3705/3707 OR 3705V/3707V)          1 credit

Open to grades 11 and 12

This course may substitute for the required course of United States Government.

Provides a foundation necessary for many activities, problems, and decisions necessary to the management of a business, including the legal framework in which American business functions.  Areas to be examined include business organization, ethical and legal responsibilities, communication, decision-making, personnel, safety, professional development, and related careers. Students will participate in a flow-through-based simulation in which they manage or co-manage their own business.

 

INTERNET NAVIGATION COMMUNICATION SYSTEMS

                                    (3704/3704v)             1 credit

Prerequisite: Keyboarding/Keyboarding Applications OR Document Creation Design/Keyboarding Applications

Addresses the use of the Internet by developing concepts, particularly those related to Web browsers, navigators, search engines, online communication methods, home and website design concepts, transfer of data, the downloading of files, security procedures, and Internet navigational tools.  Emphasizes electronic research, business report writing, business correspondence, and enhancement of oral presentation with the use of electronic media and communications.

 

TRADES AND INDUSTRY - ART AND DESIGN

 

WEB PAGE DESIGN 1                 (5766/5766V)             1 credit

Open to grades 10, 11, and 12

Prerequisite: Information Management Systems 1 OR Keyboarding/Keyboarding Applications AND Information Technology Infrastructure.

Prepares students with work-related, leadership, and employment skills for advancement to Web Page Design 2. Provides students with the opportunity to acquire basic skills in theory and practical language, structure, and topography.  Stresses HTML layout and design guidelines as applied in the design of markup language documents.    Laboratory facilities and experiences simulate those found in the web page design and industry.

 

WEB PAGE DESIGN 2                 (5767/5767V)             1 credit

Open to grades 11 and 12

Prerequisite: Web Page Design 1      

Includes exposure to basic and advanced web design, pixilated and vector-based web graphics, web animations and the dynamics of web hosting, and web design in e-commerce.  Provides students with the opportunity to acquire fundamental skills in both theory and practical application of web design and of leadership and interpersonal skill development.  Prepares students with work-related skills for the advancement into post-secondary education or industry.  Laboratory facilities and experiences simulate those found in the web page design and industry.

 

VISUAL ART AND DESIGN                     (5759)             1 credit

Open to grades 10, 11, and 12 (preference given to grades 10 and 11)

Prerequisite: Art 1

Provides a foundation in aesthetic concepts and applies these concepts to the visual art, design, printing, and the photography industries.  Course content provides the opportunity to acquire marketable skills by examining the industry and career opportunities and by developing leadership, teamwork, and industry skills.  Students need basic Windows-based computer skills; varying degrees of aesthetics and the ability to interpret many aspects of life and technology are required.  Students should have basic Windows-based computer skills.

GRAPHIC DESIGN AND DIGITAL IMAGING   (5762)       2 credits

Open to grades 11 and 12

Prerequisite: Visual Art and Design

Focuses on the principles of design and general layout procedures and covers electronic system and software programs used in graphic design, page composition, image conversion, and digital printing.  Advanced knowledge and skill in graphic design and digital imaging will be enhanced in a graphic communication production laboratory facility through experiences which simulate the graphic communication industry and school-based and work-based learning opportunities.

 

CAREER MANAGEMENT SUCCESS AND TRANSPORTATION CORE

                        (5701/5702 or 5701V/5702V)           1 credit

Open to grades 9 and 10

Core course for career clusters which provides students with tools for achieving success in their academic, work, and personal lives using basic skills and knowledge needed for success.  Topics, resented in a real-world context, provide opportunities for developing personal and career goals, effective communication skills, teamwork abilities, and successful work attitudes.  Students study safety, tools, and equipment, shop operations, and basic technician skills. In addition, students will be made aware of career opportunities and requirements of a professional service technician.

NOTE: Beginning with the 2002-2003 freshman class, this course is required for Automotive Technology and/or Diesel Mechanics Technology.  This does not apply to students entering high school prior to 2002-2003.
