Dress Code Policy Effective 2003-2004 School Year

The following are the guidelines:

*Bottoms:  Pants (standard pockets, no extra pockets on legs or elsewhere); regular style, 5 pocket, solid color denim jeans; skirts; skorts; capri pants; walking shorts*.  Also includes jumpers and dresses.

*Walking shorts/skorts K-8 Only
*Walking shorts/skorts can be worn the first four weeks and last four weeks of school 9-12 Only

Colors:  Navy Blue, Khaki, Blue Denim, and Black* (Pants are to be a solid color with no large logos or writing (example, no writing down the legs of pants or around waistband)

*If black bottoms are worn, the top cannot be black.

Bottom wear must be size appropriate for the wearer with NO SAGGING OR BAGGING, and must be worn securely at and around the waist, so as not to reveal undergarments and to prevent pant legs from touching the floor.

Large bell-bottoms, sweatpants/sweatpants style pants, hip-hugger pants, carpenter or cargo pants/shorts/skirts/dresses, wind pants, overalls, spandex, leggings, or pipe style clothing may not be worn.

Clothing must not have holes, rips, cuts, or frayed edges.

*Tops:  Shirts or blouses must have a regular collar and sleeves (example - polo shirt).  Dresses must have a collar and sleeves. Black dresses are not allowed.  Turtlenecks are permissible.  Sweaters, sweatshirts, and vests worn as outerwear, are allowed and do not have to be tucked in; however, a collared shirt must be worn underneath and be tucked in.  All other outerwear (except jackets) must be tucked in.

Colors:  Any solid color

Shirttails are to be tucked in at all times.  Tops must be long enough to tuck into pants/skirts/shorts (no bare midriffs).  Tops will not reveal cleavage.

Shirts, sweaters, sweatshirts, and vests must be free of logos, writing or symbols.  The school name and/or mascot are permissible on the upper left side of shirts.  Writing or symbols on undershirts must not be visible through outer shirt/blouse.

*Shoes:  Any color or style of shoes that you feel goes with the clothing may be worn to school.  We strongly suggest and urge you not to buy expensive designer dress shoes or expensive gym shoes.  No flip-flops or shoes with thongs between the toes will be permitted.

*Jackets/Coats:  Jackets/Coats worn to school with any writing or logo must be placed in the lockers, cloakrooms or other designated areas.

Solid color jackets/coats, without writing or logos, including official school jackets (jackets that may be purchased by anyone and which have the school name and/or mascot on upper left side), may be worn by students anytime.  Jackets may have a hood.

No trench coats will be permitted on school property.  Any coat that reaches below mid-thigh must be stored in lockers.


The following limitations shall apply:
Clothing shall be size appropriate.
All skirts, dresses, jumpers, and shorts must be no shorter than 3 inches above mid-knee.
Skirt slits must be no higher than 3 inches above mid-knee.
Belts will be required for clothing designed for belts.  (Belts are optional for K-3)

The following are considered inappropriate for school:
Chains
Facial jewelry (includes tongue piercing)
Distracting or unusual hair color or style, make-up, or contact lenses
Sunglasses (Exception: Prescription sunglasses will be allowed).
Head coverings of any kind.
Anything that is deemed disruptive or harmful to the learning environment.

Dress Down Days/Special Events/Spirit Days:
Scheduling and dress for these days will be under the direction and discretion of the individual principals, and are not to exceed four days per semester.

It is not necessary to buy any specific brand of clothing.  Any clothing made by any company is acceptable, as long as it complies with the above reqirements.

Dress Code is Required on Buses
Dress Code is Required on School Premises (Except for Extracurricular Activities or Special Events, as Designated by the Building Principal)

Special Needs Students:
The Dress Code may be waived for special needs students, with approval of the Supervisor of Special Education and the building level principal.  A copy of the student's Dress Code Exemption form will be kept on file in the Special Education Department.
