Sixth Grade Curriculum
Math
This course covers computation with whole numbers,
fractions, decimals and percents. Students in 6th grade math will be
introduced to basic geometry concepts, work with measurement, develop
concepts such as order of operations and integers, as well as interpret
and create various graphs. They will also work with ratios,
proportions, and probability. 6th grade math is a building block for
7th grade math and Pre-Algebra, and students will focus on developing
necessary skills for success in those subjects.
Honors Math
7th grade math for 6th grade students is an Honors class that provides
students with a more challenging experience, and students should
understand that more difficult material and extra requirements are
involved in this course.
Social
Studies
The
6th grade social studies team at MJMS studies Roman, Greeks, Middle
Ages, Beginning modern times, and the changing world.
Science
The sixth grade science team at MJMS uses an inquiry based
learning program through instruction utilizing four Carolina Biological
Inquiry kits. This instruction is supplemented by the Tennessee Holt
Science and Technology text which was developed using the Tennessee
Science Standards. Through the year we cover interaction between living
things and their environments; food production and energy for life;
diversity and adaptation among living things; biological change; Earth
and its place in the universe; and energy.
English
Grammar study, writing in the areas
of exposition, description, persuasion, autobiographical
information, and narrative; and literature with the reading
comprehension component,. Students participate in novel study in class
with the teacher, and read novels outside class that are assessed with
book reports, author study, and character analysis.
Students have opportunities to present reports and create visual posters
and models that demonstrate their knowledge of the character, setting,
or plot of the topic. Students are taught basic research techniques
using print sources and the Internet. Teachers encourage the many uses
of technology in their teaching.
Reading
The sixth grade Reading team work on
vocabulary and spelling as well as reading comprehension.
Seventh Grade Curriculum
Math
This course covers an
in-depth look at basic math concepts such as number theory, fractions
and decimals, ratio, proportion and percent, probability and statistics,
data and graphing, order of operations, integers and rational numbers,
and geometry and measurement. This course builds the
bridge for Pre-Algebra and develops algebraic reasoning and problem
solving skills.
Pre-Algebra
This course is an introduction to Algebra 1 and involves
more abstract concepts than regular math. This
course includes the study of patterns and number functions, integers and
rational numbers, order of operations, solving equations, data and
graphing. Also developed in this course are
algebraic reasoning skills, proportional reasoning, and problem solving
skills necessary to apply mathematics in various situations.
This class is the foundation for Algebra 1.
Please note that
Pre-Algebra for 7th grade is an Honors class that provides
students with a more challenging experience, and students should
understand that more difficult material and extra requirements are
involved in this course
Social
Studies
Introduction to Social Studies offers students a basic
foundation of social studies principles: geography, economy, government,
history, and culture. Through the use of various classroom
interactions, students are exposed to the major countries of the world
and develop the skills to identify geographic details, economic
influences, historical and governmental impacts, and cultural influences
of each country and their global impact.
Science
The 7th grade science curriculum is structured to
introduce and develop scientific concepts with the goal of long-term
comprehension and mastery. Using hands on and inquiry based methods,
the course work includes many basic scientific concepts of Life science,
Earth science, and Physical science.

Eighth Grade Curriculum
Algebra I
Algebra 1 includes
the study of functions, solving and graphing equations and inequalities,
understanding slopes as rates of change, proportionality, and using
technology to extend algebraic thinking and engage student reasoning.
Students will use physical models to represent, explore, and
develop abstract concepts as well as use critical thinking and problem
solving skills to apply mathematics in various situations.
The Algebra 1 Gateway exam and Algebra 1 Exit Test are given at
the end of this course and scores on these tests will be a determining
factor in placement for high school classes.
Please note that 8th
grade Algebra 1 is an Honors class that provides advanced students with
a more challenging experience, and students should understand that more
difficult material and extra requirements are involved in this course.
Social
Studies
8th Grade Social Studies covers American History from the Siberians
crossing the Bering Straight to the Reconstruction Era. Many exciting
topics such as the Revolutionary War, Industrial Revolution, and the
Civil War are covered in the 8th Grade Curriculum.
Science
Broad coverage, but not limited to four sciences: earth,
genetic, physical, and chemistry. In Earth Science, students will learn
broadly about volcanoes, rocks, and earthquakes. Genetic science will
introduce the student to DNA, meiosis, genotypes, and phenotypes.
Students will demonstrate comprehension of DNA by creating models.
Physical sciences involve learning about Newton's Laws, calculation of
speed, distance, time, and simple machines. Students who are interested
will have the opportunity to demonstrate comprehension by creating a
model of an amusement park ride. Chemistry involves students learning
the various aspects of chemistry, including acids, bases, and balancing
chemical equations.

Special Education
The special education department services
the needs of any student identified with a learning disability. Programs
such as direct resource services, mainstreamed inclusion classes and
monthly consult with students in the regular education program. Students
also have available to them occupational therapy, speech and language
therapy, deaf education, blind education and educational assistants, as
needed.
Exploratory Subjects
Physical Education
Physical Education
classes will encourage physical activity and positive body concepts.
Health
Health Classes will cover all body
systems and hands on with the bones of the body , CPR and AED, and
Safety issues at home, sports, biking , motor bikes, fires, and water.
Beginner Band
The Beginner Band classes are open to all students
and will teach them how to read music, help them choose an appropriate
instrument, and teach them the fundamental skills needed to play that
instrument. The beginners will perform on the December, Spring (March),
and end of the year (May) concerts.
Advanced Band
Advanced
band, opened to only 7th-8th graders with prior band experience,
continues with the teaching of fundamentals and begins preparation for
auditions and high school band. The Advanced band performs in the stands
at home football games, and on four concerts; the same three mentioned
above, plus a Veteran's Day Concert in November. These students are
allowed to audition for honor bands and have the option to perform with
the High School Marching Band and traveling to several out-of-state
competitions each fall.
Winter Guard and Winter Drum Line
The Mt.
Juliet Winter Guard and Winter Drum Line are comprised of students
grades 7-12, who have completed at least one year of marching with the
high school band. Their season begins with rehearsals in Nov.,
performances begin in Jan., and the season ends mid-April. The two
groups travels to several local and out-of-state competitions and are
recognized as being in the top Winter Guards and Drum Lines in the
World.
Chorus
The goal of chorus class is to make
each student a better singer and musician. The students learn proper
singing technique and various methods of music reading that allows each
of them, regardless of experience, to find success. Through quality
repertoire and age appropriate literature, the students begin to
experience music-making, not just singing. The students learn how to
conduct themselves on stage while performing and off-stage as good and
respectful listeners. The students are exposed to all types of music
from jazz to opera whether by listening, watching, researching, and/or
attending shows and concerts. By the end of the year each student will
hopefully have gained a new appreciation for music and singing, but most
importantly, a new appreciation for themselves.
Computer Keyboarding
Lessons from
computer software MicroType Pro. Focus on learning correct finger use
for the keys and on accuracy before speed. Touch typing--no watching the
keys. No backspace keys allowed. Students must check for mistakes and
make corrections before lesson is printed out for a grade.
Visual Arts
Art at MJMS is different
