Each student at Mt. Juliet Middle School is issued a Student Agenda at the beginning of the year to help them stay organized throughout the year in each of their classes.  Included in the front of the agenda is a student handbook that outlines the rules and procedures of MJMS.  We have included the most frequently requested informational items below, however, please refer to the student agenda for the complete handbook.

Attendance

Parents are required and expected to have their child in school and on time every school day.  Teachers will check attendance during each class and record the absences.  Parents will be notified of excessive absences and tardies.  The district attendance policy will be strictly enforced.

School Hours

School Hours for students are from 8:05am to 3:05pm.  The office is open from 7:30am to 4:00pm each school day.

Perfect Attendance

A student will be considered to have perfect attendance when they have no tardies and absences (either excused or unexcused).  Students will be awarded at the end of each grading period for maintaining perfect attendance.

Absences

If a student is absent, the school expects an excuse note when the student returns to school.  Teachers will work with students to ensure makeup work is completed.  The Wilson County Schools Attendance Policy is strictly enforced, so please view the attendance policy for further information.

Tardies

Students must be in their classrooms by 8:05am to avoid being tardy.  If students arrive after 8:05am, a parent or guardian must sign them in at the office for a late admittance slip to give to the teacher.  The District tardy policy will be enforced for all tardies.

Early Dismissal

A student's attendance will be affected if they are signed out for any reason prior to 3:05pm each school day.  Please limit your early dismissals to emergencies only.

Illness Medical Information

Mt. Juliet Middle School has a nurse on-duty throughout the school day.  If your child is sick, they will check on them.  If a child is vomiting, has a temperature over 100°, or has a contagious illness, a parent will be called to take the child home.

School Visitation

Parents are encouraged to visit MJMS frequently and participate in their child's education. We request that parents avoid conferences with the teacher during such visits; instead, schedule a conference for another time by calling the office at 754.6688 or emailing the teacher.

All visitors are asked to report to the office upon entering the building. Please sign in and put on a visitor badge. Should you be in the building without one, you will be asked to sign in and get one. This is for our student's safety. When you get ready to leave, please sign out in the office.

If you need to give your child a message, medication, homework, lunch money, supplies, etc., please go to the office instead of interrupting valuable class time. We will see that your child receives the item.

Change of Address and Phone Number

Please notify the office of any change of address or change in phone numbers. In an emergency, time may be of the essence and having correct information is imperative.

Lost and Found

The Lost and Found is located in the gymnasium. Coats, jackets and sweaters are kept for a few months and then given to the community help center. Every opportunity is taken to insure all lost items are returned to their owner. Please mark all coats and sweaters with the child's name on the tag for identification purposes.

School Wide Discipline Plan

It is our goal to provide a safe and secure environment for children to learn. In an effort to accomplish this, there are school wide and classroom rules. We believe all students can behave appropriately while at school.  We will not allow any student to stop the teacher from teaching or prevent other students from learning.  Each classroom establishes rules, rewards, and consequences.  The choice of behavior is the student's. Appropriate behavior will be rewarded. Improper behavior will be dealt with according to the Wilson County Schools Code of Conduct policy.

School Rules for Mt. Juliet Middle School

  1. Follow directions the first time given.
  2. Keep hands, feet and objects to yourself.
  3. Use appropriate language.
  4. Solve problems without fighting.
  5. Respect yourself, others, and property.

Grade Reporting System

In order to keep parents informed we use the following methods to report progress:

  1. Report cards are sent home every 9 weeks.
  2. All teachers will send home mid-9 week reports.
  3. Many teachers send papers home weekly requesting parent signature.
  4. Phone calls, notes to parents, and requested conferences are encouraged, if concerns arise.
  5. A school wide parent-teacher conference will be held in September.
  6. Standardized tests are given in the spring and these scores are sent home with the final report card.

Emergency School Closings

Wilson County Schools maintain communication with all the major radio and television stations concerning school closings.  You may also check the district website to get further information.

Guidance Department

The Guidance Department at Mt. Juliet Middle School is a multi-faceted program that helps meet student needs in a variety of ways. Our school employs three full-time guidance counselors and a part-time STARS (Students Taking A Right Stand) counselor. Services offered include individual counseling, group counseling and classroom guidance. Classes focus on character development, problem-solving skills, conflict resolutions, social skills and others as needed to help promote the success of our students. Other services are provided as needed.

Our Guidance Department also coordinates benevolent efforts at Christmas time with the Star Tree as well as disaster relief efforts for families who have suffered losses.  They work closely with several organizations to make sure any need our students might have is met.

If you would like to schedule an appointment with our counselors, you may call 754.8894 for an appointment.

Emergency Numbers

The school must always be informed as to a work number or emergency number in the event your child becomes ill or is injured at school and requires your presence. Please notify the office of any changes immediately.

Should there be an emergency involving an accident and we cannot reach you, 911 will be called. The paramedics usually transport to Summit Medical Center in Hermitage for emergency treatment at the parents' expense.

Lunch/Food and Beverages

All students are expected to purchase a lunch or bring one from home.  If a student brings a lunch, do not include glass containers and please see that your child can open any containers they bring.

Lunches cannot be charged in the classroom, office, or cafeteria.  If a child forgets his lunch or lunch money,  they will be given a peanut butter sandwich and milk.

As a helpful aid, Wilson County Schools has setup a lunch accounting system at www.parentonline.net.  Your child will be issued a lunch number account at school registration.  This account is available for you to keep money in so that your child will not need to carry cash.  As your child exits the lunch line, they will input this number and the total cost for the lunch will be deducted from the account.

Everyone must work together to keep our school attractive.  Gum is not allowed at school and food or drink is not allowed unless authorized by the teacher.

Valuables at School

Students, not the school, are responsible for their personal property.  Personal property should be taken home after school.  Be smart and take care of any valuable items by leaving them at home.  The items include money, radios, tape players, ipods, cameras, video games, etc.

School Supplies

A supply list for each grade level is available on registration day.  Each child should come to school with the necessary supplies.

Transportation

Mornings: In order to ease traffic congestion, parents who bring their children to school will need to pull all the way down to the end of the front curb to unload their child.  Unload only in the right lane.  Please follow all traffic directions given by the teachers and guard on-duty.

Bus transportation is also available.  If your child rides the bus, they will never be late to school.  Click here for Wilson County Schools Transportation to find the bus that services your home.

Afternoons: Traffic lines will be in the front of the school building.

Computer Use

Your child will have access to a computer in the classroom and a computer lab with internet access.  All computers have program filters that allow access only to appropriate materials. Our computers at school are connected to a filtered server provided by Wilson County Schools and the Department of Education.  These servers have safety features to control the sites visited on computers in the schools, however, not all material may be blocked.  Please talk with your child about appropriate internet behavior.  The District Technology Acceptable Use Policy is strictly enforced.

Your child will use the computer for Accelerated Reader, a computerized reading program, as well as for different teacher directed activities.  The Accelerated Reader (AR) program helps increase a child's reading ability. The child goes to either the school library or the public library and chooses a book that is marked with AR. (The school library and the public library has a list of the tests that we have available at our school.) They choose a book on their reading level, read it, and then take a test on the computer. The computer automatically scores it, and if they pass, they immediately see which question(s) they missed. They are awarded points, based on their book's value and score of their test. Different activities throughout the year are based on the children participating in the AR program. We encourage you to read with your child and become a part of it, too.

Teachers and Internet Communications

All teachers have websites that give parents and students up-to-date information on school and classroom activities.  You may also email the teacher from their website.  Click here to find a teacher's website at our faculty page.
