Welcome to Southside Elementary School Kindergarten.  We are excited to be working with your child this year!  Many new kindergarten parents have lots of questions.  Therefore, we have developed this site to help ease your concerns.  If you do not find the information you need here, please feel free to contact us at any time.  As a parent, you are the most important person in your child’s life.  For that reason, we want to develop a trusting relationship with you from the very beginning.  Please don’t hesitate to talk with us at any time.  We are here because we want the very best for your child.  Working together, we can always make that happen.

SCHOOL HOURS

School begins at 7:15 each morning and dismisses at 2:15 each afternoon.  If your child arrives after 7:15,
you will need to report to the office for a tardy slip, so that your child will not be counted absent.
All students must enter school through the front doors.  Doors in the breezeway between buildings remain locked.
The school building will be opened at 6:55 a.m.  If your child arrives before 7:05, he/she should report to the elementary gym where teachers will supervise until a kindergarten teacher picks up the children.
In the afternoons, bus lanes (in front of the school) will be closed from 1:55-2:15.  If you are picking up your child, you should fork off to the left upon entering the parking lot, and proceed around the building and into the right hand lane to pick up your kindergarten child.  Parents should stay in their cars at all times.  Please do not come to the classroom door to pick up your child.  Teachers and support staff will walk your child to the car and assist them as they get in.  Due to the large number of car riders, we ask that your child know how to buckle his/her seat belt, in order for you to move forward in a timely manner and prevent a traffic backup.

HOLIDAYS AND SCHOOL CLOSURES

Please visit www.wcschools.com to obtain a school calendar listing all school closure dates for the entire year.
If school closes early due to inclement weather, the local television and radio stations will be notified as soon as possible.  We ask that you keep a close eye/ear on these if the weather appears questionable to you.

ENROLLMENT REQUIREMENTS

In order for your child to enter kindergarten he/she must be five years old before October 1 of the current year.  Required paperwork that must be submitted in order to begin include:
1. Proof of residency (a current gas, water or electric bill)
2. Birth certificate (mother’s copies are accepted)
3. Immunization/Physical record
4. Social Security Number
5. Custody papers (if applicable)

There is also a $15.00 school fee payable at the beginning of the school year.

ABSENCES

If your child is absent from school you will need to send in a note on the first day he/she returns in order for the absence to be counted as excused.  If possible, ask your doctor’s office for a note whenever you have a visit there.  If your child comes to school late or must leave early, you will need to sign him/her out in the office before he/she can be released from the classroom.  Several tardies or early dismissals can accumulate into a day’s absence.  When possible try to schedule doctor and dentist appointments after school or during school breaks.

ILLNESS AND MEDICATION

Please do not send your child to school sick.  Children must be fever-free for 24 hours before returning to school.  If your child becomes sick at school, you will be notified and asked to pick them up.  These illnesses include:  fever, vomiting, pink eye, head lice.
Teachers are not permitted to administer medications.  If your child requires medicine, while at school, you will need to meet with the school nurse for instructions.  Please DO NOT SEND MEDICATION WITH YOUR CHILD AT ANY TIME.  You can reach the school nurse through the main office.

CLOTHING

Label all clothing….especially coats, jackets, hats and sweatshirts.
Label your child’s lunch box and backpack as well.
We recommend tennis shoes for comfort and safety.

VISITORS

All visitors are required to report to the office to sign in and receive a visitor’s pass anytime you enter the building.  Adults seen in the hallway, not wearing a pass, will be asked to return to the office.

REPORT CARDS

These will be sent home each nine weeks.  Please sign and return.

FIELD TRIPS

We take several field trips during the school year.  You will receive a field trip brochure at the beginning of the year with all dates listed.  We strongly encourage parents to attend with us whenever possible.  Children will wear field trip shirts whenever we leave the school property.  These will be kept at school during the year, but will be yours to keep at the end of the year.

MONEY
Do not combine money into one check.  Field trip money, lunch money, picture money, etc. go into separate accounts.  Teachers do not keep cash in their classrooms.  Please send all money in an envelope with your child’s name and the teacher’s name on the outside.  The amount and purpose of the money would also be helpful.

LUNCH

Each child has their own lunch account that they manage themselves.  It is crucial for them to learn their five digit account number.  You can practice this at home on your computer keypad-as the cafeteria keypad is identical.  Children are allowed to buy extra items from the check out line.  You can control this by notifying the cafeteria manager in writing expressing your child’s parameters.  Daily lunch price is $1.50.  Breakfast is $1.00.  Money should be sent in an envelope and we encourage you to send it in on a weekly or monthly basis-preferably on Mondays.
If packing your child’s lunch, please make healthy choices.  Also remember that carbonated drinks (colas) will leak from a thermos.  Microwaves are not available for heating lunch box food.

PARTIES/ROOM MOTHERS

Parties are also held during the year.  If you would be interested in helping with these or helping in the classroom on a regular basis, you will have the opportunity to sign up at Open House.  In Kindergarten, we take all the help we can get J

DISCIPLINE

Your child’s teacher will send you their Assertive Discipline procedure, outlining rules, consequences and rewards.  Please discuss these with your child and encourage him/her to listen closely to their teacher at all times.

DAILY COMMUNICATION

Each day your child will bring home a folder and agenda.  The folder will contain work completed at school as well as important notes for you to sign and return.  Please empty the contents of the folder every night and return any forms as soon as possible.  The agenda will have daily notes on information or behavior for your child.  Please take time to look at it each night and initial that you have seen it.  This is also a great place to write a note to the teacher if there is something you need to know or discuss.  Agendas are checked at school each morning as well.
Folders and agendas should be in your child’s backpack everyday.  Please practice with your child putting the folder, agenda and towel inside and zipping/unzipping his/her backpack.
