ANATOMY AND PHYSIOLOGY (5509) or (5509V) (Dual Enrollment with Vol State)
Open to grades 11 and 12
1 credit

Prerequisites:   Biology and Chemistry

This course will substitute for a science credit.

Board-approved materials fee may be collected.

Designed for students planning to pursue a health care profession; includes the study of the normal body defenses against disease processes, the effects of abnormal factors on the normal functioning of the body, the comparison of anatomical structures and physiological functions of each body system, and the treatments for system diseases.

 

BIOMEDICAL APPLICATIONS (5513) or (5513V)
Open to grades 11 and 12
1 credit

Prerequisites:   Biology and Chemistry

An overview of biomedical applications.  Topics covered include understanding laboratory procedures fundamental to biomedical research, which include D.N.A., protein purification, and cell and tissue culture.  Additional topics include communication skills, the history and development of the field of biomedical research and understanding the legal environment and technology transfer of b biomedical research.

 

CLINICAL INTERNSHIP (5501)
Open to grades 11 and 12

Students must be enrolled in a Health Science class in order to be enrolled in this class.

Students make choose to complete a clinical internship after completing Medical Therapeutics, Diagnostic Medicine, Medical Informatics, Support Services, Rehabilitative Therapies, Nursing education, or Emergency Medical Services.  The internships are designed to be completed in a hospital, nursing home, rehab center, medical office, or other health care facility.

 

DIAGNOSTIC MEDICINE (5511) or (5511V)
Open to grades 11 and 12
1 credit

Board-approved materials fee may be collected.

Designed for students interested in medicine.  Includes the study of cardiology, imaging, the medical laboratory, radiology, and other forms of diagnostic medicine.  Upon successful completion, students will be able to perform basic medical diagnostic skills.

 

EMS, EMERGENCY MEDICAL SERVICES (5510) or (5510V)
Open to grades 11 and 12

Provides students with the opportunity to gain the knowledge, skills and confidence to give appropriate care when called to help a victim of injury or sudden illness.  Designed for students who are interested in a better understanding of emergency medical technicians, paramedics, ER nurses, and other careers associated with emergency management.

 

Forensic Science  (5514)
Open to grades 11 and 12
1 credit

Board-approved materials fee may be collected.

Provides students with an overview of how science is applied to solving crimes.  Topics including history of forensic sciences, collecting of evidence, analyzing results, and hands-on applications of many laboratory techniques used in solving crimes and identifying people and future careers.  Students will participate in a staged crime scene to apply knowledge and skills gained.

 

HEALTH INFORMATICS (5505)
Open to grades 10, 11 and 12
1 credit

Board-approved materials fee may be collected.

This course will provide knowledge of ways to document an individual care in the home, hospital, long-term care, outpatient, and others.  Careers could include medical records, health management, risk management coordinator, computer operator, patient advocate, clinical department director, data analyst and others.

 

HEALTH SCIENCE EDUCATION (5504) or (5504V)
Open to grades 9, 10, 11, and 12
1 credit

This course is designed as the first course a student should take if they are interested in being in the Health Care profession.  Includes the study of health careers, career success, leadership development through Health Occupation Students of America (HOSA) activities, basic nutrition, diet therapy, safety measures, applications of metric systems, environment/community health, growth and CPR and first aid.

 

MEDICAL TERMINOLOGY (5590) (Dual Enrollment with Vol State)
Open to grade 12
1 credit

Prerequisite:  Health Science Education and Medical Therapeutics

Board-approved materials fee may be collected.

A study of the language of the Allied Health sciences and medicine with emphasis on body systems, prefixes, suffixes, root terms, pronunciation and spelling.  Upon completion of the course the student will be able to:          analyze words structurally; correlate an understanding of the word elements with basic anatomy, physiology, and disease processes of the body; and recognize correct spelling and pronunciation.

 

MEDICAL THERAPEUTICS (5506) or (5506V)
Open to grades 10, 11, and 12
1 credit

Board-approved materials fee may be collected.

Explores career opportunities and issues in health care while focusing on leadership development, anatomy and physiology, medical microbiology, pharmacology, and basic skills.  Upon successful completion of this course, students will have basic skills, such as checking blood pressure, and will be certified in the lifesaving techniques of CPR and first aid.

 

NURSING EDUCATION (5507) or (5507V)
Open to grade 12
1 credit

Prerequisite:  Health Science Education and Medical Therapeutics

Board-approved materials fee may be collected.

Parent and Student informational meeting required prior to start of class.  Date to be announced.

Focuses on the study of dealing with direct bedside nursing care.  Includes clinical experience and supervised practice (for selected students) in a nursing home setting.  Upon successful completion, the student will be eligible to take the state exam for Certified Nursing Technician.

 

REHAB THERAPY (5503) or (5503V)
Open to grades 10, 11, and 12
1 credit

Board-approved materials fee may be collected.

Designed for students interested in exploring careers associated with rehabilitation.  Includes the study of bones, muscles, joints, and nerves in the human body; correct body alignment; routine range of motion exercises; personal fitness; exercise physiology; or recreational therapy.  Also includes information for students interested in speech therapy, music therapy, occupational therapy and athletic training.

 

SUPPORT SERVICES (5500) or (5500V)
Open to grades 10, 11 and 12
1 credit

Board-approved materials fee may be collected.

In this course you will learn knowledge and skills necessary to provide an environment for the delivery of health care.  Careers could include central supply, facility maintenance, food service, interior decorating and others.

 

Some of the courses described above can be articulated at Volunteer State Community College, Nashville State Tech, Tennessee Technology Center at Hartsville, and the Tennessee Technology Center at Nashville.  Students interested in attending any of these post-secondary institutions must assume the responsibility of determining whether they meet the criteria to articulate.  Contact your guidance counselor for details.
