Food & Nutrition Overview

  • Wilson County students are enjoying healthy new choices in their cafeterias.

Wilson County is serving school meals that meet tough new federal nutrition standards, ensuring that meals are healthy, well-balanced and provide students all the nutrition they need to succeed at school.

School meals offer students milk, fruits and vegetables, proteins and grains, and they must meet additional standards requiring:

    • Age-appropriate calorie limits
    • Larger servings of vegetables and fruits (students must take at least one serving of produce)
    • A wider variety of vegetables, including dark green and red/orange vegetables and legumes
    • Fat-free or 1% milk (flavored milk must be fat-free)
    • More whole grains
    • And less sodium

We are always working to offer students healthier and tastier choices.  School meals are a great value and a huge convenience for busy families.

USA EXTENDS FREE MEALS FOR ALL KIDS THROUGH DECEMBER 31, 2020

  • USDA has extended the Summer Food Service program through December, 2020 or until available federal funding runs out.

What this means for Wilson County families is that all children, regardless of eligibility, can eat a standard breakfast and lunch free through December.

Money can still be put on a student's account to purchase à la carte snacks. If the student does not purchase any à la carte items, then any money currently on student accounts will roll over to be used when the free program ends on December 31, 2020.

For remote day and/or virtual students wanting meals through the drive-thru feeding program, parents will now be able to pick up meals for all of their children at one school, and their younger children under school age can also get free meals. We still ask parents to email the cafeteria manager of the school they would like to pick up meals by 9:00 a.m. each day, and give the number of student meals needed. Pick up is from 11:00-11:30.

We will also give a breakfast with each lunch for the following morning. Children do not have to be present when meals are picked up. We hope this will help those in need who have been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.

To place an order or ask any follow-up questions specific to your school, contact your School Cafeteria Managerand be sure to check out our School Breakfast & Lunch Menus.

Please note: This federal relief effort became effective 9/1/20, so any previous meal charges will still apply, however you can communicate with your cafeteria manager regarding that if need be.
