What is the Adult Learning Center?

The Adult Learning Center offers many opportunities for educational growth for adults. The most frequently requested program prepares students to earn a high school equivalency diploma (formerly GED).  We also have  ESL (English as Second Language) classes and refresher classes in reading, math, and writing  for students enrolling in college or vocational training.  A basic literacy program benefits students who struggle with reading comprehension, math, and writing.   We partner with programs that help students in job searches and post-secondary educational goals. All classes are small with self-paced learning.  Our goal is to provide quality education for students who are seeking an opportunity for the betterment of their lives.

    What is the HiSET?

The HiSET  is the High School Equivalency Test that is taken to earn a High School Equivalency diploma. This was once called the GED in the state of Tennessee.

The HiSET exam reflects the skills of a high school graduate and provides a fair, rigorous exam.  The HiSET exam is about seven hours from start to finish if taken in one setting, and is broken down into five subtests.  A student also has the option to take the subtests individually on different days if preferred.

    What is the cost?
Classes are FREE! In fact for those who qualify, a voucher will be issued to pay for the HiSET exam.
How do I enroll in the HiSET classes?
Call (615) 443-8731 and provide an email address.  We will email the enrollment paperwork with directions for completion.
What should I expect at orientation?
Orientation begins with taking placement assessments, meeting with staff to go over your results, and setting up a plan to help you complete your studies.  This appointment takes approximately three to four hours and is scheduled at convenient times in the morning or afternoon.
What do I need to bring to my appointment?
A state or federal issued photo ID such as a driver’s license or passport that is not expired.
How long will it take to earn my HiSET?
Everyone enters at different academic levels, so there is no set time. The date of completion is dependent on the student’s commitment and determination to succeed.
    Are online classes available?
An online program is available for anyone who meets certain requirements.

Is college an option with a HSE (high school equivalency diploma)?
Yes, the HiSET is accepted at public and private universities and technical schools.

Can I use the TN Reconnect or TN Promise college programs?
Yes, the HiSET program works with government agencies to make sure HiSET students meet federal education requirements.  Federal student aid in the form of grants, loans, and work-study programs are available to HiSET students.

    Can I join the military?
Yes, but we encourage all students to talk with their recruiter about the opportunities offered with a HiSET  diploma.

Will it help me get a job?
Yes, most employers ask for a high school diploma or high school equivalent.
