Wilma Hawkins, Principal

I grew up in Shelbyville, TN (known as TN Walking Horse Capital of the World and Pencil City) and now reside in Murfreesboro, TN.

I am in my 32nd year in education and my 12th year as an administrator. I began my teaching career in the Rutherford County School System, where I taught grades 3rd-5th and also worked as a Title I funded Interventionist and a Reading and Math Instructional Coach. I came to Wilson County in 2010, where I served as an Assistant Principal and Principal at Elzie D. Patton Elementary before coming to WA Wright Elementary.

I attended Middle Tennessee State University, where I obtained my Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education, Master’s Degree in Library Science, and a Specialist in Education Degree in Administration and Supervision.

During my personal time, I enjoy spending time with my family, reading, traveling and shopping at antique and thrift stores, and working in various capacities in my church.

I find joy in serving my community by being an active member of the Rutherford County Habitat for Humanity Home Selection Committee, a life coach for women who are rehabilitating their lives from drug and alcohol abuse, and providing resources for men, women, and children who are unhoused through the non-profit organization that I founded in 2008,  Umbrella of Hope. I am also a member of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc.
