Derek Southworth named 2019's "Teacher of the Year" for Wilson County
Derek Southworth, who is a Social Studies teacher and coach at Lebanon High School, has been named as 2019’s “Teacher of the Year” for Wilson County.
29 educators throughout the county were nominated for the award by their school this year. From there, an anonymous panel from Cumberland University was responsible for going through the candidates individually to determine who they believe is most deserving of the award.
This is the 21st year the awards presentation and banquet have been sponsored by Wilson County Chevrolet-Buick-GMC-Hyundai and CedarStone Bank, as a way of supporting education. Sponsors say their goal is to recognize the most valuable profession in the community—teachers! They began the program more than two decades ago to honor local educators who excel in their profession and ignite the passion of learning.
